Rocks reach new heights in Cup
Edinburgh Rocks advanced impressively into the semi finals of the Sainsbury’s Classic Cola Cup, defeating London Towers 78-75 in a pulsating contest in Derby.
The Scots put on an excellent second half display at both ends of the court and came back from a seven points deficit with ten unanswered points to take the lead at 54-51 with 14 minutes remaining. But the game advantage exchanged hands four times further as the two closely matched rivals traded blow for blow.
Level at 70-70 with 2:40 remaining, the Scots received two quick baskets from Joel Burns to edge definitively in front. Towers’ Danny Lewis would score five points more, toward a game-best 29 tally, but scores from Ted Berry and John McCord, plus a crucial rebound from Brendan Graves handed Edinburgh their first ever spot in the last four round. Berry ended with team-high 24 points.
“It adds a whole new dimension to our season,” admitted a delighted Graves, “It’s exciting for the team and knowing it was a knock out competition, we’re pleased to have reversed our recent slide.”
