BBL Stone fails to drop as Giants escape from Storm
Derby Storm's Kip Stone missed a late three-pointer that would have forced overtime in their clash with Manchester at the Thunderdome, as the Giants posted their fourteenth straight Dairylea Dunkers Championship win by a score of 65-68.
Giants had gone into an early 9-22 lead after holding the Storm scoreless for the opening four minutes. But Stone and Cypheus Bunton shared the last nine points of the first quarter to close the deficit to 18-22.
Derby then edged in front as the second and third periods went basket for basket, and after leading 37-36 at the break, only one point still separated the two going into the fourth.
Four straight points from All-Star Roy Hairston - who would notch a game-high 23 points - following a Giants' timeout helped Manchester to a 60-63 lead with two minutes to play. A Carl Miller three-pointer levelled the scores at 63-63 with 2:30 remaining, but his side would not lead again, Stone's last gasp effort rimming out with two seconds on the clock.
Stone and Darrian Evans each hit 17 for Storm who dropped their third straight loss.
