Bears find Rocks no picnic

Edinburgh Rocks gained their fourth win in five games last night by defeating Brighton Bears 60-75 in the Dairylea Dunkers Championship. And it was the Scots' defence which ultimately delivered the victory as they restricted their hosts to just 5 points in the final quarter.

The two sides, who will meet again at Meadowbank on Sunday, were level at 36-36 at half-time but Brighton ended the third period up by two points. However Jim Brandon's side broke clear with a 10-2 spurt after the re-start and never trailed again. Ted Berry led all scorers with 25 while John McCord chipped in with 23.

"We still missed our point guard but we played with a lot of grit," was Brandon's verdict. "We're still the best defensive team in the league and that gives us opportunities at the other end."

Jan Trojanowski and Lormont Sharp notched 14 points apiece for the Bears.

The Rocks complete their three-game road trip tonight in Sheffield seeking a first ever win over the current league champions. The Sharks have fallen off the Northern Conference pace since winning the National Cup last month and Rocks' centre Brendan Graves is hoping the Scots can catch them cold.

"They seem to be struggling a little bit right now having lost a few games. We had a very close game with them already with them this year losing by one point. It's probably a very good time to play them."
