Giants' Dorsey named BBL MVP
Tony Dorsey of Manchester Giants has been voted the 1999/2000 BBL Player of the Year, as elected by the league's 13 coaches. Danny Lewis of the HARIBO London Towers and last season's winner, Terrell Myers of the Westfield Sharks Sheffield, were second and third respectively in the ten-strong list which forms the All-League team.
29-year-old Dorsey, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, helped lead the Giants to the
Northern Conference title of the Dairylea Dunkers Championship this season, as
well as a place at the uni-ball trophy, Classic Cola Cup and Championship finals.Dorsey's Coach, Nick Nurse, expressed his delight at the honour. "He deserves it," he declared. "Tony has had an outstanding season. He has led us to a lot of wins and a long way in all the competitions, because we have survived three knock-out competitions.
"I think consistency is a word that you have to throw in there with Tony Dorsey's
name - I don't know how many games it was, but it was something like 230 straight in which he scored in double figures or something ridiculous like that - that's unbelievable. He really produces on a nightly basis and he's a big time player."The big part of Dorsey's game has always been his offensive threat and this season he averaged 23.22 points per game - third best in the Championship. He has also added 7.56 rebounds and 4.14 assists per game, both of which place him in the top twenty in the Championship.
Dorsey's team-mate, Roy Hairston, who was new to the BBL this season, has also made the All Star Team, voted as the fifth best player, behind Towers' star and England international, Steve Bucknall. That makes Hairston the highest ranked newcomer this season.
Coach Nurse added, "Roy has had a great year. I have to be honest and say he has surprised me, because I knew he was going to be decent, but I think what has really surprised me is how well he and Dorsey have meshed together.
"He has exceeded my expectations of how he would fit in with us. He has been a consistent player - he hasn't missed any games and he comes to practice every day and works hard. He has been a pleasant surprise."
