Thunder so close to shocking Trophy holders
Teesside Mohawks retained the NBL Trophy for the second successive season with a 81-78 defeat of Worthing Thunder Rebels at Sheffield Arena. And it was largely thanks to a brilliant 25 points haul from ex-Manchester Giants' guard Jason Swaine that Tony Hanson's side were able to resist a brilliant late comeback from the Rebels.
The holders had raced into a lead in the first half, playing some confident basketball in compiling a 45-31 half-time lead. But Worthing did a great job of gradually reducing the gap and led by the dual threat of Sean Hampton and ex-Bears forward Peter Knechtel, they closed the gap.
But despite Hampton's team-high 22 point haul, they could not pull off a dramatic late upset.
